Artist Statement / CV
Having had an eclectic career ranging from Human Resources, Recruitment, and Accounts Administration to Events Organising, Puppetry Workshops and working as a Freelance Artist, Nusra's skills cover a wide range of fields. She is primarily a self-taught artist who seeks to explore a variety of themes in her practice. Using bold, vivid colours to ignite the senses, she creates art that embodies "a surreal sense of the spiritual.” Her ideas are constantly evolving and ever-changing and may also include elements of humour and poetry.
She is interested in features that define human character, and the exploration of the inner self. Soul-searching, spiritual contrast, and the articulation of ideas that reveal a higher state of being are themes greatly echoed throughout her work. Nusra is inspired by personal evolution, the natural world, the artificial world, travelling overseas, being immersed in different cultures, the juxtaposition of unlikely pairings, misfit culture, the punk era, the breaking of rules, the use of puns and wordplay, and psychic insights. Her inspirations also include vivid dreams, Autumn, conflicts and desires. She seeks to capture the spiritual energy that exists beneath the layers, the truth behind the mask, the depth behind the eyes, the ethereal quality of the life force present in all things. Hence, her art is marked by a purely intuitive quality. Her style and medium is diverse. Oils and acrylic are employed for detail and colour, but she also enjoys the tactile and organic process of making sculptures and installations from found materials and mixed media. In addition, she loves photography, writing poetry, and participating in various theatre and opera projects. Currently, she is studying a Fine Art Degree at the Birmingham School of Art.
